TC stayed over after seeing the Hesperion XXI show with Randy the
night before. We all slept in and had a leisurely breakfast featuring fresh
Peet's coffee and jam-topped Eggos. TC left after breakfast to get home
to his sweetie, Kaoru, while Randy and Ting enjoyed a lazy Saturday around
the house.
As it was a clear day, the sunset was a beautiful gold-in-blue. No
wonder those are the offical colors for the state and the UC system!
After dark, we took off for the Center for the Arts Theatre at Yerba
Buena Gardens, across the street from the Moscone Convention Center in
San Francisco, where tonight's entertainment was a spell-binding concert
of separate sets by the Kronos Quartet and Terry Riley.
In the first half of the show, Kronos peformed three pieces:
-
Terry Riley: Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector (1981)
-
Charles Mingus (arr. Sy Johnson): Myself When I Am Real (1963/arr.
2000)
-
Peteris Vasks: Quartet #4 (1999)
After a short break, Terry Riley concluded the night's show with a set
of solo piano improvisations, in the manner of north indian ragas, lasting
about 50 minutes. |
